Kona Earth, a single-estate, 100% Kona coffee farm was featured today on KTVU-TV San Francisco. Owners Steve and Joanie Wynn are Bay Area transplants who traded in a 30-year career in video production for coffee farming.
Host Claudine Wong interviewed the couple during an early morning, live-feed segment from the farm.
The couple arrived this past summer and dove in headfirst. They've been busy making improvements to the farm's infrastructure and launching their new e-commerce site which sells their coffee farm-direct to coffee lovers everywhere.
One key component of their new venture is their give-back program, "Care In Every Cup". They donate a percentage of each purchase to Kohala Center, a non-profit on the Big Island that does important work protecting ecosystems on island, including the reefs, cloud forests and farmland.
Located in Holualoa on the Big Island of Hawaii, the farm is situated at 2000 feet on the tropical slopes of the Hualalai volcano. The cooler temperatures and wetter climate allows the coffee cherry to mature slowly, resulting in robust flavor and large beans.
Currently, they're knee deep in round three of picking for this year's harvest and busy shipping out last-minute holiday orders.
