When it comes to enjoying a delicious cup of Kona Earth coffee, the freshness of the coffee beans plays a crucial role in determining the flavor and aroma of the final brew. But what exactly is coffee bean freshness, and why is it so important?
What is Coffee Bean Freshness?
Coffee bean freshness refers to the time that has elapsed since the beans were roasted. After roasting, coffee beans undergo a process called degassing, which releases carbon dioxide. This degassing process is crucial for the beans to reach their optimal flavor profile. This is why you see the one-way valve on coffee bags. It allows gas to escape but no gasses to enter the sealed bag.
Why is Freshness Important?
The freshness of Kona coffee beans directly impacts the taste and aroma of the coffee. As coffee beans age, they begin to lose their flavor compounds and essential oils, resulting in a flat and dull taste. Freshly roasted beans, on the other hand, retain their complex flavors and aromatic oils, leading to a more vibrant and flavorful cup of coffee.
How Long Should My Beans "Rest" for Optimal Flavor?
Allow your freshly roasted coffee beans to "rest" for optimal flavor for a few days after roasting. To fully develop the flavor profile, lighter roasts need about a week to ten days, and darker roasts about three to five days.
At Kona Earth, we micro-batch roast to order, typically shipping one or two days after roasting. Shipping tends to take about two days from Hawaii to the mainland and the beans are off-gassing in transit. So, if your Kona coffee arrives four days after roasting, you may still want to give it a few days to "rest" before brewing a cup.
How to Preserve Coffee Bean Freshness
To preserve the freshness of your coffee beans, it is essential to store them properly. Coffee beans should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place away from heat, light, and moisture. Kona Earth has an Airscape canister specifically for this purpose.
Avoid storing coffee beans in the refrigerator or freezer, as they can absorb odors and moisture, affecting the flavor of the coffee.
The Whole Bean Coffee Advantage
It is important to grind your coffee beans just before brewing to ensure maximum freshness. Once coffee beans are ground, they begin to lose their flavor rapidly due to increased surface area exposure to air. This is why Kona Earth only sells whole bean coffee. In addition to preserving bean freshness, whole beans also allow the greatest flexibility in choosing a grind size suited to your preferred brewing method.
Farm Fresh and Small Batch Roasted
Freshly roasted Kona coffee that ships directly from the grower is always superior to store-bought coffee. This is because you can be confident that the beans are fresh, unlike those in a store where items may have been sitting on the shelf for months.
At Kona Earth, we pride ourselves on shipping freshly roasted, high-quality Kona coffee beans that will deliver an exceptional coffee-drinking experience.
